Navigating the Pending Merger
Since the pending merger was first announced nearly two years ago, UFCW Local 99 and our international union have been laser-focused on securing the best possible outcome for Arizona grocery workers and their families.
UFCW Local 99 & Past Mergers
Recently, UFCW Local 99 hosted a discussion with union members who have worked through past mergers. Here are their stories:
“I started at Smitty’s in 1982 and since then have been through mergers with Smith’s, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, and even Safeway & Albertsons. I’m so happy that I have a union because I’ve never had to worry about starting over again and going back to square one with my seniority or vacation time.”

“We opened a store on 39th on Pinnacle Peak that was an ABCO prior to it becoming a Safeway. It was difficult as an ABCO employee because we had no idea what was going to happen but we knew contract-wise that everything was going to be what it should be. We could rely on the union to make sure our seniority and everything would transfer, and it did.”
