As new cases of COVID-19 continue to spike in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, we demand the companies continue their commitments to protect employees and the public.
In letters to several major employers, President McLaughlin has requested explanations for their scaling back changes to their health protections, including customer capacity limits, social distancing rules, special shopping hours and requiring customers to wear masks. Some employers also have stopped assigning employees to sanitize shopping carts and providing PPEs to workers, among other measures.
McLaughlin’s letters state that the employers need to discuss with the union before implementing these changes in policy as required by federal law.
“The National Labor Relations Act entitles unions to all information necessary to represent members,” he writes. “This includes any and all information that will allow the union to negotiate a healthier and safer working environment.
“Local 99 is committed to ensuring the health and safety of all our members,” he continues. “It is beyond dispute that unions have extensive rights to information concerning any plans to protect their members and workers.”
