The eclectic grocery chain Trader Joe’s has strived to cultivate an image of friendliness, tongue-in-cheek humor and social consciousness, attracting throngs of loyal customers who appreciate the ethos, the quality and the reasonable prices. We’ll see if these customers stick around now that the grocery chain, which despite its folksiness is a global supermarket company owned by German conglomerate Aldi Nord, may have just added union-busting to its identity.
Employees and shoppers alike were shocked Thursday before last to find that the longtime Trader Joe’s wine shop in Union Square, which sat next to one of the chain’s supermarkets, had been closed, with emails going out at 12:01 a.m. informing workers of the closure that same day.
