UFCW 8-Golden State, along with UFCW Locals 5 and 648, are engaged in around-the-clock negotiations with Safeway-Albertsons management in an effort to reach a fair agreement for 25,000 union grocery workers spanning from the Grapevine in the south to the Oregon-California border.
Union leaders are seeking meaningful improvements in wages, adequate funding for health care and pension benefits, and stronger scheduling protections and other on-the-job safeguards. These elements are essential to securing a tentative agreement that members can confidently support.
If no deal is reached by midnight on Friday, July 25, the unions are prepared to initiate a strike at Safeway locations across Northern and Central California starting at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, July 26.
“This is about fairness and respect for hard-working, frontline members who keep our communities fed and our stores running,” said Jacques Loveall, President of UFCW 8-Golden State. “We’re calling on Safeway-Albertsons to do right by union members and agree to a contract that reflects their value and dedication.”
